PJ Library Promotes Reading, Jewish Life & Community

Michael and Lindsay Fineman have both been involved with Jewish Federation since they were growing up, Michael in Omaha and Lindsay right here in Kansas City. They met in Chicago and got to know each other while serving on the Jewish United Fund’s Young Leadership Division (YLD).

Four years ago, the Finemans and their children moved back to Kansas City where they found PJ Library events to be great place to connect with other Jewish families.

“I’ve always been a big book worm and now that we have three young daughters, I’m trying to impart in them the same passion for reading,” Lindsay said.
After learning more about how Harold Grinspoon created PJ Library with the goal to ensure that all Jewish children have access to books and Jewish educational materials, Lindsay was intrigued. Several years ago, she joined the PJ Library committee.

“I’ve been really thrilled about all of the engaging events we’ve created for young families – everything from celebrating holidays, to our Bagels and Babies community-wide baby shower, to our My First Book Club partnership, to our Gathering For Good programming where kids of all ages can learn the value of mitzvot while doing community service-related projects,” Lindsay said.

Not only are these events fun and engaging, but they also tie in the Jewish values discussed and illustrated so beautifully in the PJ Library books. The Finemans are part of an all-volunteer board that helps to put these programs and events on.

“I joke that I’m often “voluntold” by my wife to come set up for the PJ Library events, including on my birthday and on Super Bowl Sunday, but it’s a cause I also believe in and it’s a great way to connect with other young families,” Michael said. “We’re extremely thankful for all of the volunteers and donors who make these gifts possible and knew that our donation to Federation could help support this wonderful program!”
